Escher-type tricks of perspective, a ski slope blooms into an avalanche of flowering trees, stars from a moonlit night become sky fireflies, sea waves merge into snow-peaked mountains and more.

Flotsam
In this wordless picture book, a young boy develops the film from a boxy barnacle-encrusted underwater camera that he found on the beach. When he reveals the photographs, readers are taken on a fantastical undersea excursion where they view an octopus holding story hour in a living room, miniature green aliens exploring the environment, a windup fish and more. There are also portraits of children from various countries and time periods, each child holding a photograph taken by another child. Eventually, the boy adds his self-portrait to the others and he tosses the camera into the waves where it washes up as flotsam for someone else to enjoy. The intricate watercolour illustrations take readers on a refreshing escape from real life.
This book could provide an invitation for students to create imaginative visual stories without words.

Art First Nations. Tradition and Innovation
Featuring both traditional and innovative art works, the posters in these kits are beautiful examples of painting, carving, clothing, basketry, jewellery and masks of First Nations peoples from the Arctic to the American Southwest.
The manual contains thematic modules comparing traditional and modern artists and their works from each of the five major cultural regions. Activities are suggested for each of the curriculum components. Included are biographies of artists, maps, timelines, assessment activities, bibliographies and a glossary.
These resources contain significant Canadian content. One module in each kit focuses on Plains art work, but the inclusion of Arapaho of Kansas and Oklahoma under the heading "Métis" may cause confusion. The map on page 19 in each manual shows where individual artists live/lived, but the actual cultures are more widespread.

Roll with It, Featuring Laura Hale. Grades 3 & 4
Roll with It is a collaborative project that includes all students contributing to the final artwork. The piece organically develops and evolves in response to student creation and composition. Laura explores materials and their transformation. Students consider colour, texture, shape, form and pattern while they develop material techniques. They cut, combine, layer and roll varying sizes of tissue paper strips into paper tubes that are then cut into bead-like lengths. Students then arrange and glue the rolled paper tubes of various sizes and colours in an upright position onto a substrate or surface (plywood or framed canvas) that will eventually hang on the wall in the school. The numerous irregular sized beads in a variety of colours sprout up in different directions, creating an abstract sculptural paper collage. The final artwork brings to mind aerial landscape views, satellite imagery and/or biological and geographical patterns and microscopic cellular formations.
