ROBA10
Module 10: Debugging Circuits (Optional)
Outcome
Incorporate appropriate strategies and conventions for debugging circuits.
Indicators
(a) Follow a standard colour convection (e.g., white is signal, negative is black and red is positive) when assigning wires for different purposes.
(b) Organize electrical and electronic components and make all connections in a neat and tidy manner.
(c) Develop and follow a test strategy for debugging each sub circuit.
(d)

Debug a non-working circuit, following a step-by-step process and considering questions such as:

  • Did you build the circuit as described in your circuit diagram or schematic?
  • Is there power to your circuit?
  • Have you exceeded the limitations of any component?
  • Are all terminals receiving the correct voltage and polarity?
  • Are there any short circuits?
  • Is the logic of the circuit correct?

SaskCode Arduino Kit
SaskCode has assembled classroom kits of hands-on materials, such as robot car kits, Arduino starter kits and sensors, that are designed to support the teaching of robotics skills at Grades 7-12 using the Arduino computing platform. Free activities to use with the kit are available for download through Google Drive. Kits are available for sale to any school in the province, and lending kits are available for borrowing, free of charge, by teachers in schools from school divisions that are part of the Saskatoon Industry Education Council (SIEC) partnership (see the SIEC website for a list of school divisions by area). To be eligible to borrow a kit, however, a teacher must complete a professional development session linked to that kit. For more information, please visit the SIEC website - https://www.saskatooniec.ca/

Tinkercad
This website allows 3D models to be constructed, modified and exported to 3D printable formats. The software can be used for 3D editing, circuit design and testing, and block coding. Along with the designing circuits and coding, this site has a simulator built into the dashboard for creating and testing circuits in an online virtual area. It also incorporates the use of an Arduino microcontroller. This site is regularly updated and can incorporate circuits and code blocks. Through this site, one can create virtual robots and test virtual codes and circuits with minimal equipment. Users must create an account which is free of charge.
