Module 9B: Computer Technology B (Core)
Outcome
Assess the impact of computer technology on society, including its prevalence in our everyday lives.
Indicators
(a) Recognize various hardware such as tablets, smart phones and laptops, as computing devices.
(b) Investigate changes in computer technologies (e.g., smart phones, laptops, mobile applications) over time.
(c) Compare computer-assisted operations (e.g., word processing, sending text messages, internet searches) with the equivalent operations from 25, 50 or 75 years ago.
(d) Examine the societal impacts of computer technologies such as digital assistants, social media applications, global connections and working remotely, augmented reality, virtual reality and mixed reality.
(e) Identify how variations in access to computer technology might create inequities between students within a school, one school compared to another, and one community (e.g., remote location with intermittent internet service) compared to another (urban location with latest technology for internet access).
(f) Explain why a country with a developing economy and extreme geographical terrain may face challenges related to the infrastructure required to make technologies accessible to its citizens.
(g) Discuss the environmental impacts of the manufacture, use, and disposal of some computing devices (e.g., the use of heavy metals in manufacturing, disposable devices).
(h) Identify and discuss the utility of computer related products that are currently on the market (e.g., smart appliances and home automation, augmented, mixed and virtual reality applications, smartphones, Global Positioning Systems and self-driving vehicles).
(i) Reflect on the importance of computer technology in one’s life by asking questions such as: What would I do differently without my mobile device?; In what ways is society reliant on computers?
