INFO14
Module 14: Artificial Intelligence (Optional)
Outcome
Investigate current and potential uses and applications of artificial intelligence.
Indicators
(a) Define artificial intelligence (AI).
(b) Describe various types of artificial intelligence, including reactive machines, limited memory, theory of mind and self-awareness.
(c) Explain how to identify whether a robotic or automated device is considered to have AI.
(d) Analyze how devices with AI work differently than controlled or autonomous devices and robots.
(e) Provide examples of current uses of AI (e.g., real-time language translation, voice to text features, chatbots, spam filters, virtual assistants, autonomous cars), and how they relate to communication.
(f) Examine the extent to which AI can exceed or replace human ability in regards to certain tasks (e.g., game-playing computers, self-driving cars and personal assistants).
(g) Explore the factors of human intelligence and behaviour that cannot be replicated in AI (e.g., common sense, complex reasoning or intuition).
(h) Discuss the impact of AI on societal needs and desires such as personal assistance, transportation, research and exploration.
(i) Explain the ethical implications (e.g., racial profiling, choosing who lives or dies, unemployment, employment opportunities) of applications of AI.
(j) Discuss the impact of specific AI applications on individuals or on societies (e.g., businesses receive less junk email because of spam filters, making communication more effective).
(k)

Investigate a specific application of AI (e.g., spam filters):

  • Describe the purpose of the AI application (e.g., to detect and prevent the delivery of unwanted email);
  • Present or illustrate a specific example of the application (e.g., show the feature in one’s email inbox);
  • Explain how the application is an example of AI (e.g., it learns from, and makes judgments based on, certain criteria); and,
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the AI application (e.g., It reduces the amount of junk, but it might also filter important email).
(l) Explore careers in the field of AI.
