Module 1D: Injury Prevention (Core)

Note: Teachers should determine student familiarity with workplace injury prevention. This will help determine if they require a review of concepts or more in-depth learning.

Outcome
Apply injury prevention principles to ensure safe work performance in the autobody trade.
Indicators
(a) Identify industry standard personal protective equipment (PPE), including dust masks, approved respirators, coveralls, chemical resistant gloves, eye and hearing protection and footwear.
(b) Identify, label, store and handle hazardous materials according to Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS 2015).
(c) Assess the fire plan for the work area, including components such as fire alarms, fire extinguishers, exits and procedures, and make recommendations for improvements.
(d) Assess hazards and apply appropriate safety procedures when working in a confined space.
(e) Disconnect batteries and other power sources prior to undertaking autobody repairs where appropriate.
(f) Describe ways to reduce personal injury or material and equipment damage as a result of unsafe work acts or environments.
(g) Explain the proper procedures to follow to report a workplace injury.
(h) Apply safe and fair work practices, including freedom from violence, harassment and bullying.
(i) Assess the ergonomic design of the work space and implement appropriate procedures to ensure safety.
(j) Implement a plan for a safe and healthy classroom and shop environment.
