Module 6: Metal Straightening (Core)
Suggested Time: 20-30 hours
Level: Introductory
Prerequisite: Modules 3
Outcome
Assess damaged areas and carry out repairs to straighten metal.
Indicators
(a) Research the range of corrective work procedures required to straighten metal.
(b) Estimate technical measurements to prepare a surface for repair.
(c)

Apply the proper use of hand tools to contour metal including:

  • creating patterns or templates to record the shape and contour of metal;
  • checking metal contours using templates;
  • identifying the direction of the damage and the indirect and direct damage;
  • roughing the metal to prescribed contours using all-purpose dollys;
  • raising the metal to a crown using templates as patterns;
  • removing minor low spots in the metal using all-purpose dollys in conjunction with flat-faced hammers;
  • filing sheet metal using 100-grit sandpaper to show high and low spots in the metal; and,
  • identifying high and low parts of the metal surface and determining appropriate procedures to repair.
(d) Examine metal to detect how stretched areas feel and look, and determine how to shrink the areas.
(e) Examine the metal to know where to shrink and how much to shrink, and use appropriate tools to shrink the areas.
(f) Research, estimate and compare the repair cost to straighten metal versus replacement.
(g) Assess the design and organization of the workspace to prevent workplace injuries when straightening metal.
