Module 9: Contoured Surface Repair (Core)
Suggested Time: 4-6 hours
Level: Introductory
Prerequisite: Modules 4 and 5
Outcome
Assess damaged areas and carry out repairs to contoured surfaces.
Indicators
(a) Prepare cost estimates of the materials used for repairing contoured surfaces.
(b) Estimate areas to be cut out to do contoured panel repairs.
(c)

Demonstrate how to measure areas and transfer to metal panels, including:

  • shaping metal panels to the contour of the areas being replaced;
  • constructing repair patches; and,
  • applying correct welding procedures (e.g., lap joint or butt joint and spot or plug weld).
(d) Examine patches to ensure repairs are ready for refinishing and painting.
(e) Estimate how much body filler and hardener is needed to repair damaged surfaces.
(f) Perform appropriate procedures and select appropriate tools to prepare work areas for body filling.
(g) Practice proper safety procedures for welding and using cut-off wheels.
(h) Assess the design and organization of the workspace to prevent workplace injuries when repairing contoured panels.
