Module 11: Estimating Repair Costs (Optional)

Outcome
Estimate the damage and time required to carry out repairs on an automobile.
Indicators
(a)

Analyze the role of insurance in the autobody trade in Saskatchewan and elsewhere including:

  • describing insurance, liability, waiver, total loss, premium, deductible and package policy;
  • examining the role and responsibilities of the insurance adjuster/broker, automobile appraiser, automobile owner(s) and autobody repair shop; and,
  • comparing original equipment manufacturer (OEM), recycled, remanufactured and after-market parts to repair an automobile.
(b)

Estimate damage repair costs including:

  • detailed description of all labour operations that must be performed;
  • complete list of parts and materials needed for the repair; and,
  • total price including labour, parts, materials and applicable taxes.
(c) Interpret technical service bulletins about potential issues that could result in the need for automobile repairs.
(d) Determine the extent of the damage from outside the automobile and work inward and list everything by section that is bent, broken or missing.
(e) Identify the conditions that make an automobile a total loss.
