Module 14: Advanced Automobile Structural Design (Core)
Note: students should not work on air bag systems. Only certified technicians should diagnose and repair air bag systems.
Outcome
Examine the evolution and characteristics of structural components in each section of the automobile.
Indicators
(a) | Research the history of automobile structural design including major changes and characteristics of selected components. |
(b) | Identify front (e.g., cowl, shock towers, radiator and supports, fire wall, fenders, hood), centre (e.g., floor pan, pillars, rocker panel, rear shelf, doors, glass, hinges, side impact beam, roof panel, instrument panel, dash) and rear (e.g., trunk floor, trunk lid, quarter panel, lower rear panels, rear shock towers, inner wheel housing, upper body panel) section components of an automobile. |
(c) | Describe the construction and safety features of plastic bumpers. |
(d) | Identify part numbers, prices, installation time and procedures using original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications and software and/or manuals. |
(e) | Describe proper safety procedures used by certified technicians to disable an automobile air bag sensor system. |
(f) | Examine the properties of dissimilar automotive materials (e.g., carbon, fibre, plastic, stainless). |
