Module 17: Glass Removal and Installation (Core)
Outcome
Analyze types and functions of automobile glass and carry out glass repairs.
Indicators
(a) Describe the different types (e.g., laminated and tempered) of glass and their purpose in an automobile.
(b) Research legislation related to approved automotive glass materials.
(c) Examine glass damage (e.g., circular bullseyes, linear cracks, crack chips, dings, pits and star-shaped breaks), location of damage (e.g., inside of windshield, deep damage to both layers of glass, complex multiple cracks, very long cracks, contaminated or edge cracks) and identify appropriate tools, materials and procedures to conduct glass repairs.
(d) Compare the advantages and disadvantages of using original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and aftermarket automobile glass in repair.
(e) Determine required procedures to remove and install glass in an automobile.
(f) Demonstrate appropriate use of hand and power tools to repair glass (e.g., windshield, sidelite and backlite).
(g) Practise correct safety procedures such as wearing gloves, long sleeved apparel and eye protection when repairing glass.
(h) Investigate issues and potential solutions related to recycling automotive glass.
