Module 22: Automotive Refinishing and Painting (Optional)

Prerequisite: Modules 10 and 12
Outcome
Assess complex corrosion damage to refinish and repaint part of an automobile.
Indicators
(a) Examine the cause of corrosion damage and select the appropriate products and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) procedures to protect against corrosion.
(b) Prepare a cost estimate of the materials required to refinish and repaint an automobile.
(c) Select appropriate tools, such as a spray gun, and appropriate techniques to perform basic surface preparation.
(d)

Identify steps required to prepare an automobile for painting including:

  • selecting the appropriate products according to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications;
  • describing the uses of primer and paint and identifying the pot life of paint or primer;
  • adjusting primer to the correct viscosity for spraying and determining the appropriate amount of hardener to add to the primer;
  • choosing the type of solvent appropriate for the temperature in the shop and adjusting the amount as needed; and,
  • examining the automobile to identify imperfections in the finished paint job and carrying out appropriate corrective action.
(e) Practise correct safety procedures such as wearing overalls and safety goggles and using a respirator.
(f) Practise proper safety procedures following WHMIS 2015 specifications.
(g) Describe effects of collision repair and refinishing technology on human health and well-being, including tradespersons working in the field and those who use their services.
(h) Examine collision repair and refinishing technology’s sustainability practices and impact on the environment.
