Module 11: Automotive Wheel Bearings (Optional)
Outcome
Diagnose, service and repair automotive wheel bearings and hubs.
Indicators
(a) Identify and follow safe work practices (e.g., avoid dry spinning bearings with air and follow correct procedures when working with bearing presses) when working with automotive wheel bearings, including maintaining a clean and organized work area.
(b) Identify common automotive bearing types.
(c) Handle, clean and repack wheel bearings following appropriate procedures.
(d) Inspect and evaluate wheel bearings and hub condition.
(e) Remove and install wheel bearings, cups and seals using appropriate tools and equipment.
(f) Remove and install wheel bearing hub assemblies.
(g) Adjust wheel bearing pre-load appropriately.
(h) Follow correct torqueing procedures for all wheel bearing fasteners and discuss how improper torqueing can be a safety issue.
