MECH13A
Module 13A: Automotive Brake Systems (Core)
Outcome
Diagnose, service and repair automotive brake systems.
Indicators
(a) | Identify and follow safe work practices (e.g., be aware of asbestos dust from brake components, avoid dust inhalation and avoid contact with brake fluid on painted surfaces) when working with automotive brake systems, including maintaining a clean and organized work area. |
(b) | List the properties, maintenance and testing procedures of different types of automotive brake fluids. |
(c) | Describe the construction, application, and inspection of brake components (e.g., brake hoses, lines, wheel cylinders, calipers, drums, rotors and hardware). |
(d) | Explain how principles of friction apply to disc and drum brake systems. |
(e) | Discuss factors that influence automotive brake performance. |
(f) | Describe the purpose, construction and operation of electric, hydraulic and vacuum power brake assist systems. |
(g) | Identify common brake problems and related diagnostic procedures. |
(h) | Perform common automotive brake system scheduled maintenance such as resurfacing brake drums and disc rotors. |
(i) | Remove, install and/or adjust brake system components and bleed air from hydraulic brake systems using appropriate methods and tools. |
(j) | Follow correct torqueing procedures for all brake systems fasteners and discuss how improper torqueing can be a safety issue. |
