Module 21: Clutches and Release Mechanisms (Optional)
Outcome
Diagnose, service and repair clutches and release mechanisms.
Indicators
(a) Identify and follow safe work practices (e.g., be aware of asbestos dust from clutch components, avoid dust inhalation, avoid having pressurized hydraulic fluids pierce the skin or enter the bloodstream and be aware of component weight) when working with clutches and release mechanisms, including maintaining a clean and organized work area.
(b) Explain the purpose and function of clutch assemblies.
(c) Describe the construction and operation of clutch assemblies, including clutch fork and release bearing mechanisms.
(d) Explain the implications of slippage and excessive free play in a clutch.
(e) Identify common symptoms and faults associated with clutches.
(f) Perform common clutch and release mechanism scheduled maintenance such as adjusting cables and linkages.
(g) Diagnose and perform clutch and release mechanism repairs (e.g., clutch disc, pressure plate, flywheel, release mechanism, adjustments and alignment).
