Outcome
Diagnose, service and repair automatic transmissions.
Indicators
(a) Identify and follow safe work practices (e.g., lift and support components properly and be aware of component weight and pinch points) when working with automatic transmissions, including maintaining a clean and organized work area.
(b) Demonstrate proper procedures for disposal of used transmission oil and explain potential environmental concerns associated with disposal of transmission oil.
(c) Explain the purpose and function of automatic transmissions.
(d) Describe the operation of an automatic transmission in terms of its components (e.g., torque converter, clutches and bands and planetary gear sets).
(e) Identify common symptoms and faults associated with automatic transmissions.
(f) Diagnose and perform automatic transmissions repairs, such as transmission flushing, changing transmission filter and pan gasket, inspecting and clearing venting, adjusting linkages and removing and reinstalling the transmission.
