Outcome
Diagnose, service and repair automotive starting systems.

(a) Identify and follow safe work practices (e.g., disconnect battery and prevent grounding of live wires) when working with automotive starting systems, including maintaining a clean and organized work area.
(b) Identify and locate the components (e.g., battery, starter motor, solenoid, ignition switch and starter relay) of a typical automotive starting system.
(c) Explain how the principles of electromagnetism apply to automotive starting systems.
(d) Describe the function and operation of automotive starting systems and their components.
(e) Describe the operation of starter activation and drive mechanisms.
(f) Identify the common symptoms and faults associated with automotive starting system malfunctions.
(g) Use appropriate equipment to test automotive starting systems.
(h) Diagnose and repair common automotive starting system faults such as starter failure, control circuit failure and poor connections.
