Module 34: Automotive Computer Systems (Optional)
Outcome
Diagnose, service and repair automotive computer systems.
Indicators
(a) | Identify and follow safe work practices (e.g., be aware of static electricity discharge, shock hazard, pinch points and hot components) when working with automotive computer systems and their components, including maintaining a clean and organized work area. |
(b) | Explain how automotive computers (e.g., PCM, TCM and BCM) receive, store and process information to make decisions. |
(c) | Explain the relationships that exist between inputs (e.g., O2, MAP, MAF, speed and weight sensors) and outputs (e.g., injectors, IAC, ignition coil, warning lights and braking solenoids) of automotive computer managed systems (e.g., engine, transmission, body, ABS and passenger restraint). |
(d) | Explain the construction and operation of computer controlled fuel and ignition systems. |
(e) | Retrieve and interpret computer codes and data stored in the memory of automotive computers. |
(f) | Use appropriate equipment (e.g., graphing multimeter, scope, scan tools, graphing scan tools, AVR tester and noid lights) to test automotive computer systems. |
(g) | Diagnose and perform repairs to automotive computer systems following appropriate test procedures. |
