Diagnose, service and repair automotive steering systems.

Indicators for this outcome
(a) Identify and follow safe work practices (e.g., be aware of the dangers of welding or heating steering linkage components) when working with automotive steering systems, including maintaining a clean and organized work area.
(b) Compare the operation and components of linkage and rack-and-pinion steering systems.
(c) Explain the parameters (e.g., caster, camber and toe) that affect wheel alignment and how misalignment of each can affect vehicle handling and tire wear.
(d) Describe how steering component wear or damage can affect handling, steering control and alignment geometry.
(e) Inspect and assess steering components for damage, corrosion, wear and excessive play.
(f) Diagnose and perform common steering system repairs using appropriate equipment.
(g) Make preliminary wheel alignment adjustments after replacing steering components (e.g., pitman or idler arm and tie rods).
(h) Follow correct torqueing procedures for all steering systems fasteners and discuss how improper torqueing can be a safety issue.
