Diagnose, service and repair automotive cooling systems.

Indicators for this outcome
(a) Identify and follow safe work practices (e.g., check coolant pressure and temperature) when working with automotive cooling systems, including maintaining a clean and organized work area.
(b) Demonstrate the proper procedures for disposal of used coolants and explain potential environmental concerns associated with antifreeze disposal.
(c) Describe how cooling systems remove and dissipate heat from engines, including the role of antifreeze.
(d) Explain the function of the components of a liquid cooling system.
(e) Compare the operation of liquid and air cooling systems.
(f) Perform common cooling system tests (e.g., visual inspection, pressure tests, leak detection and coolant tests) and maintenance procedures (e.g., checking fluid levels and flushing the cooling system).
(g) Diagnose and perform common automotive cooling system repairs such as removing and replacing belts, radiator, water pump and thermostat.
(h) Fill automotive coolant systems according to specifications and purge air from systems where required.
