Module 1C: General Safety (Core)

Note: Teachers should determine students’ familiarity with general safety in the work area. This will help determine if they require a review of concepts or more in-depth learning.

Outcome
Apply principles and techniques for injury prevention to ensure safety in the work area.
Indicators
(a) Recognize and apply safe and fair work practices including freedom from violence, harassment and bullying.
(b) Identify industry standard personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety goggles, footwear, hearing protection, headwear and protective clothing.
(c) Review the fire evacuation plan for the work area including the location of fire alarms, fire extinguishers and exits.
(d) Describe ways to reduce personal injury or material and equipment damage as a result of unsafe work acts or environments.
(e) Discuss appropriate actions in case of an injury or accident, such as whom to contact and first-aid procedures.
(f) Explain the purpose of ventilation in a confined environment.
(g) Identify hazardous materials and relevant WHMIS procedures.
(h) Describe the importance of a clean work area and methods used to maintain a clean work area.
(i) Identify risks and potential safety hazards (e.g., tools on floor, exposed live wires and extension cords).
