Module 17B: Transformers B (Core)
Outcome
Calculate voltage, current, power and efficiency of transformers.
Indicators
(a) Calculate the primary and secondary voltage and current values of several transformers using the turns ratio formula (Tr=Vp/Vs=Np/Ns=Is/Ip):
  • Np is the number of turns in the primary winding;
  • Ns is the number of turns in the secondary winding;
  • Vp is the voltage in the primary winding;
  • Vs is the voltage in the secondary winding;
  • Is the current in the secondary winding; and,
  • Ip is the current in the primary winding.
(b) Determine the power of transformers using Watt’s Law.
(c) Differentiate between the two types of electrical losses in transformers.
(d) Recognize that the power input is equal to the power output in a transformer assuming no losses.
(e) Calculate the efficiency of transformers using the efficiency formula: efficiency=output power/input power x 100%.
