ELEC25B
Module 25B: Diodes B (Optional)
Outcome
Investigate the properties of diodes.
Indicators
(a) Draw diagrams of silicon or germanium material doped with indium, gallium and boron to produce positive (p-type) material.
(b) Draw diagrams of silicon or germanium material doped with arsenic, phosphorus, bismuth and antimony to produce negative (n-type) material.
(c) Explain what happens when n-type and p-type material form a junction.
(d) Explain, with the aid of a diagram, the effect of applying different polarities on a junction.
(e) Test different shaped diodes to determine their anode and cathode.
(f) Interpret meter readings of diodes to check the labeling of the leads.
(g) Draw the schematic symbols for various diodes such as zener diodes, varactor diodes and LEDs.
(h) Explain how diodes with different properties can be used to perform different functions.
