Module 26C: Transistor Theory C (Optional)
Outcome
Investigate the function of transistors in operational amplifier (op-amp) circuits.
Indicators
(a) Describe the purpose and operation of op-amps.
(b) Provide examples of applications of op-amps in electronic circuits.
(c) Compare the purpose and operation of junction field effect transistors (JFETs) and insulated gate field effect transistors (IGFETs).
(d) Draw a schematic diagram of a properly biased N-channel and P-channel JFET.
(e) Follow safety precautions when handling and using an IGFET.
(f) Compare the input and output voltage values of inverting and non-inverting op-amp circuits.
(g)

Construct, test and explain the operation of circuits that use an op-amp such as:

  • a voltage comparator;
  • a timer; and/or,
  • a voltage regulator.
(h) Observe the waveforms and plot response curves for low-pass, high-pass and band-pass active filters in op-amp circuits.
