Outcome
Investigate careers in marketing.
Indicators
(a) Research opportunities and trends in marketing careers in Saskatchewan, Canada and the world.
(b) Compare the marketing services offered by a variety of Saskatchewan-based marketing or advertising companies.
(c) Examine the roles, responsibilities, educational qualifications and personal and professional qualities typically required by those who work in marketing.
(d)

Generate a list of questions to ask a professional in the marketing industry to learn about their work; questions may include:

  • What do you do?
  • What knowledge and skills do you use every day?
  • What does a typical day look like for you?
  • What is the most interesting marketing project you have worked on?
(e) List personal interests, skills, abilities and traits that may lead to a career in marketing.
(f) Research which marketing occupations are facing shortages and which are oversubscribed locally, regionally and/or provincially.
(g)

Reflect upon personal suitability or unsuitability for specific marketingrelated occupations considering criteria such as:

  • initial and continuing educational and training requirements;
  • duties and skills required for the occupation;
  • work environment, including typical hours and shift work and typical locations;
  • current wages received in Saskatchewan and how these compare to current wages in other regions of Canada;
  • physical, mental and emotional stresses related to the occupation;
  • workplace hazards and safety considerations;
  • other occupations with which they interact;
  • certification requirements in Saskatchewan; and,
  • emerging and future trends in the industry.
(h)

Develop a personal plan that incorporates the four Ps (i.e., product, price, promotion and place) for marketing oneself to obtain employment in a position of personal interest, including:

  • Product – oneself and the skills, experience and competencies one has to differentiate one’s personal brand;
  • Price – the salary range one is seeking;
  • Promotion – ways to communicate with potential employers; and,
  • Place – where to interact or network with potential employers (e.g., online, networking and career fairs).
