Outcome
Examine the principles of sustainable design for interior design and decorating.
Indicators
(a) Identify the primary goals of sustainable interior design.
(b)

Research concepts relating to sustainable design including:

  • sustainability;
  • eco-friendly;
  • reducing;
  • reusing;
  • recycling;
  • repurposing;
  • revaluing/upcycling; and,
  • life cycle cost/maintaining.
(c) Research the role of rating systems such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) in promoting sustainable design for residential and commercial projects.
(d) Investigate the role of the WELL Building Standard™ in promoting features for buildings, interior spaces and communities that support human health and wellness.
(e)

Identify how interior designers and interior decorators can incorporate principles of sustainable design, such as designing for:

  • low environmental impact;
  • longevity and flexibility;
  • waste reduction; and,
  • healthy environments.
(f) Discuss how renovating existing spaces can contribute to environmental sustainability.
