Outcome
Examine the characteristics and evolution of housing styles.
Indicators
(a) Examine how housing has evolved to meet human needs using available materials.
(b) Discuss how the evolution of housing styles is related to geographical influences as well as historical and economic events during the time in which the housing was constructed.
(c) Compare traditional Indigenous housing styles common to North America with those brought by immigrants from various cultures (e.g., English, Spanish, Scandinavian, German, Dutch, French).
(d) Investigate how traditional Indigenous housing has influenced current housing styles.
(e) Compare the characteristics of classic traditional (e.g., Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival, Southern Colonial, Victorian), modern (e.g., Prairie Style, Arts and Crafts, Tudor, Spanish Revival, International) and postmodern (e.g., contemporary, ranch, split-level, solar, earth-sheltered) housing styles.
(f) Provide examples of various housing styles found locally, regionally, nationally and globally.
(g) Explore how the exterior style of houses can influence interior design and decorating decisions.
(h) Examine how the elements and principles of design apply to the exterior appearanceof a building.
