Outcome
Explore how residential and commercial building codes apply to interior design applications.
Indicators
(a) Discuss the importance of standardized regulations (e.g., zoning bylaws, building codes) in providing requirements that ensure the safety, health and well-being of occupants, builders and the community.
(b) Discuss the responsibilities an interior designer has regarding awareness of government regulations such as building and fire codes.
(c)

Identify current national and provincial legislation, such as the National Building Code of Canada, National Fire Code of Canada, National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings, Accessible Canada Act, The Fire Safety Act, The Uniform Building and Accessibility Standards Act and municipal building bylaws, that regulate residential and commercial construction.

(d) Provide examples of the bylaws and regulations that might apply in specific contexts, such as an office, kitchen, single family home, hotel room, classroom or restaurant.
(e)

Identify current Saskatchewan residential and commercial building codes and advisories for concepts such as:

  • venting for stoves;
  • egress for bedrooms;
  • railing for stairs; and,
  • types of materials used.
