Module 14: Building Components (Optional)
Outcome
Assess the construction and purpose of building components in residential or commercial spaces.
Indicators
(a) Describe the function of each of the major building components (e.g., floors, walls, windows, doors, stairs, roofs) found in residential and commercial spaces.
(b) Explain how the different building components collectively define interior spaces.
(c) Investigate the types of questions interior designers may have with respect to each major building component (e.g., Is the wall load bearing? Can a stairwell be moved or reconfigured? Is there plumbing or wiring in the wall?).
(d)

Evaluate the following to determine suitability for a defined space:

  • window types such as bay or bow, single and double hung, horizontal slide, casement, stationary, awning and hopper;
  • door types such as flush, panel, French, Dutch, barn, folding, sliding and stacking;
  • wall options such as storage walls, movable walls, pony walls, structural walls, party walls and partition walls;
  • ceiling types such as cove, open beam, dropped, cathedral, vault, tray and conventional flat;
  • flooring options such as vinyl, cork, ceramic tile, hardwood, engineered wood and bamboo; and,
  • roof options such as asphalt shingles, wood shingles and shakes, clay tiles and metal roofing.
(e) Create a visual representation (e.g., drawing, model, digital rendering) of building components that can be used in a variety of residential and commercial spaces.
