Outcome
Examine the characteristics of residential and commercial building materials.
Indicators
(a) Research the history of building materials from various eras.
(b) Discuss factors (e.g., strength, durability, performance, aesthetic appearance, maintenance) that influence the choice of building materials.
(c) Provide examples of how wood, glass, steel and concrete are used in residential and commercial buildings.
(d) Research the characteristics and environmental impact of a variety of materials (e.g., wood, glass, steel, concrete) used in design.
(e) Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of building materials such as earth, recycled wood or plastic composite lumber, straw bales, insulating concrete forms and recycled steel.
(f) Prepare a cost estimate of materials used to construct or renovate a defined residential or commercial space.
(g) Construct a materials board to present potential material choices for a residential or commercial project to clients.
(h) Research the life cycle of building products and materials.

Explain how to use technical sheets, safety data sheets and pictograms from the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) to obtain information about product safety.
