INDD16
Module 16: Energy Efficient Buildings (Optional)
Outcome
Examine the characteristics of energy efficient buildings.
Indicators
(a) Research the history of energy efficient buildings and building technologies.
(b) Discuss the benefits of constructing and retrofitting buildings to improve energy efficiency.
(c) Compare the advantages and disadvantages of energy efficient housing models such as self-sufficient, earth-sheltered, active and passive solar and net-zero.
(d) Outline factors to consider when assessing a building for energy efficiency.
(e)

Research the impacts of energy-saving techniques including:

  • site selection and placement of building;
  • design of building;
  • wall assembly;
  • energy efficient roof;
  • glazing systems; and,
  • heating and cooling systems.
(f) Describe the operation and benefits of active and passive energy management systems.
(g) Research available financial incentives to retrofit residential spaces to improve energy efficiency.
(h) Create, using drawing skills, computer-aided design programs or model- making, an innovative energy efficient space considering factors such as passive or active energy sources, windows, appliances and sustainable construction materials.
(i) Develop assessment criteria in consultation with peers and instructor to assess an innovative energy efficient space.
(j) Discuss own and peers’ energy efficient designs to provide feedback on the strengths and areas for improvement.
(k) Review current codes (e.g., National Energy Code) and their impact on design.
