Outcome
Examine the
characteristics of
energy efficient
buildings.
Indicators
(a) | Research the history of energy efficient buildings and building technologies. |
(b) | Discuss the benefits of constructing and retrofitting buildings to improve energy efficiency. |
(c) | Compare the advantages and disadvantages of energy efficient housing models such as self-sufficient, earth-sheltered, active and passive solar and net-zero. |
(d) | Outline factors to consider when assessing a building for energy efficiency. |
(e) |
Research the impacts of energy-saving techniques including:
|
(f) | Describe the operation and benefits of active and passive energy management systems. |
(g) | Research available financial incentives to retrofit residential spaces to improve energy efficiency. |
(h) | Create, using drawing skills, computer-aided design programs or model- making, an innovative energy efficient space considering factors such as passive or active energy sources, windows, appliances and sustainable construction materials. |
(i) | Develop assessment criteria in consultation with peers and instructor to assess an innovative energy efficient space. |
(j) | Discuss own and peers’ energy efficient designs to provide feedback on the strengths and areas for improvement. |
(k) | Review current codes (e.g., National Energy Code) and their impact on design. |
