Outcome
Investigate hair styles and hair styling techniques.
Indicators
(a) Identify styling aid (e.g., mousse, serum and spray) selection and application needed to achieve desired finish.
(b) Examine language used in hairstyling to describe hair textures (e.g., fine, medium, coarse, kinky and curl pattern) and hair characteristics (e.g., elasticity, porosity and density).
(c) Discuss the importance of using appropriate industry terminology when describing hair by referencing texture (e.g., fine, medium, coarse, kinky and curl pattern) and characteristics (density, elasticity, porosity).
(d) Examine and apply different hair styles (e.g., weaving, knotting, locs, box braids and twists).
(e) Execute braiding techniques including visible, invisible and fishtail.
(f) Discuss the significance of braiding in First Nations’ cultures.
(g) Perform and critique a roller set and comb-out.
(h) Demonstrate finger waving and pin-curl technique.
(i) Perform and critique blow-dry and curling iron techniques.
(j) Discuss and apply appropriate safety measures when using a blow dryer or a curling iron.
(k) Construct a design plan for implementing thermal tools.
(l) Implement elements of art and principles of design, use of tools, hair terminology and safety to achieve a selected look from a visual support (e.g., picture, video, other technology supports).
(m) Conduct an inquiry into the questions, how does hair styling impact an individual’s self-esteem and well-being or how does a hairstyle reflect an individual’s worldview?
