Module 20A: Introduction to Skin Care (Optional)
Outcome
Examine the function, types, conditions and characteristics of skin.
Indicators
(a) Identify and describe the structures (e.g., epidermis and dermis) and functions (e.g., heat regulation, absorption, excretion and sensation) of skin.
(b) Examine how client’s choices and behaviours (e.g., working outside, sunscreen) may affect skin including factors that might preserve the health of skin.
(c) Identify the nerves of the skin and explain the function of the nerves.
(d) Define and explain melanin, types of glands (e.g., oil and sweat), skin disorders and conditions and skin type (e.g., oily and dry).
(e) Discuss the benefits of steaming/hot towels on the face.
(f) Discuss the purpose and manipulations of massage.
(g) Demonstrate the manipulations used in massage.
(h) Explain the purpose of a facial.
(i) Explain and demonstrate the use of equipment, implements, products and materials when giving a facial.
(j) Practice appropriate safety and sanitation procedures when conducting skin care services.
(k) Conduct an inquiry into the question, how do environmental factors affect the skin?
