CH20.4
Examine First Nations and Métis instrumental music (e.g., powwow social dance music, anthems, Métis kitchen parties, popular music) and its role in communities, past and present.
Indicators for this outcome
(a) Research and engage with Elders and local musicians and composers to learn about the role of instrumental music, past and present.
(b) Investigate protocols and traditional/natural laws related to creating and performing music (e.g., gifting of music, cultural appropriation).
(c) Examine the connection between cultural identity and music (e.g., reclaiming, preserving and affirming traditions).
(d) Examine selected First Nations, Métis and international Indigenous musicians who challenge societal inequities through music (e.g., treaty education outcome SI11 - analyze how the unfulfilled aspects of treaties, with international Indigenous people, have resulted in inequities).
