Outcome
Explore the importance of food sovereignty.
Indicators
(a) Explore the importance of food sovereignty.
(b) Assess the relationship between food sovereignty and food security.
(c) Research the historic role of trade as an element of food sovereignty in pre-European contact Indigenous societies in what is now Canada.
(d)

Examine benefits of food sovereignty such as:

  • local economic development;
  • preserving traditional lifestyles;
  • sustainability of livelihoods;
  • availability of fresh produce and other food in local grocery stores and restaurants; and,
  • increased capacity for supplying and accessing food locally.
(e) Identify challenges and opportunities faced by newcomers and First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples and communities in achieving food sovereignty.
(f) Examine successful case studies and initiatives that promote food sovereignty at local, regional, and national levels, highlighting innovative approaches and best practices.
(g)

Evaluate the role played in facilitating and maintaining food sovereignty by individuals and entities such as:

  • food growers;
  • food providers (e.g., grocery stores, local farmers’ markets, restaurants);
  • community organizations;
  • food movements (e.g., urban farming, organic farming, fair trade, slow food);
  • governments;
  • nutritionists; and
  • consumers (e.g., students and their families).
(h) Investigate the role of trade as it relates to food sovereignty.

The field-to-plate documentary series follows host, Jenn Sharp, as she travels across Saskatchewan and learns about 8 ingredients. Jenn joins farmers, growers, artisans, and chefs and discovers how these simple ingredients are elevated into mouthwatering dishes.

Flat Out Food traces local ingredients from the field to the plate with the help of host Jenn Sharp. She travels through the province, meeting the farmers, the food artisans and the chefs who make Saskatchewan’s culinary scene shine. This documentary series highlights unique Saskatchewan ingredients and their journey from the field to the plate. Season 2 includes the following episodes:
