Outcome
Assess the
importance of animal
health and well-being
to sustainable food

Indicators
(a) | Differentiate between animal health and animal well-being. |
(b) | Discuss animal welfare as a human responsibility. |
(c) | Discuss the concept of biosecurity and its role in preventing the introduction and spread of diseases in livestock populations. |
(d) | Examine the Five Freedoms (i.e., freedom from hunger and thirst; freedom from discomfort; freedom from pain, injury, and disease; freedom to express normal and natural behavior [e.g., having sufficient space]; and freedom from fear and distress) as the globally recognized gold standard in animal welfare. |
(e) | Discuss how voluntary and mandatory assurance systems (e.g., Verified Beef Production Plus and proAction), can assure consumers that animal welfare standards are being maintained. |

Research elements of animal health and welfare practices, guidelines and regulations pertaining, but not limited, to:

(g) | Identify the role of organizations such as the National Farm Animal Care Council, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Canadian Cattle Association/Saskatchewan Cattleman’s Association, Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association, Saskatchewan Egg Producers, Dairy Farmers of Saskatchewan/Canada, Canadian Cervid Alliance, Chicken Farmers of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Pork Development Board in advocating for the health and welfare of animals raised for food in Saskatchewan and Canada. |
(h) | Assess essential elements (e.g., adequate ventilation and space, proper drainage, access to food and water) of animal welfare during transportation of livestock. |
(i) | Explain the importance of animal health in supporting sustainable food systems. |
(j) | Evaluate current federal and provincial laws and regulations for animal health and welfare. (e.g., Federal Health of Animals Act, Saskatchewan Animal Protection Act and Regulations 2018, Saskatchewan Animal Health Act 2019). |
