Outcome
Examine the role of horticulture in supporting food security.
Indicators
(a) Identify examples of horticulture such as landscaping, gardening and growing crops for food, fiber and fuel.
(b) Differentiate between horticulture and larger scale agriculture.
(c) Differentiate between edible and ornamental horticulture.
(d) Describe the contribution that horticulture can make to food security.
(e) Research uses (e.g., food, medicine, utility, ceremonial) of traditional plants grown by First Nations peoples in Saskatchewan.
(f) Identify conditions (e.g., climate, drainage, elevation, sunlight) that contribute to plant survival.
(g) Define the term hardiness zone as a geographic area with a range of conditions conducive to plants’ growth and survival.
(h) Identify hardiness zones in Saskatchewan and Canada.
(i) Explore food-producing plants (e.g., trees, shrubs, vegetables) that are suitable for growing within the local area and other areas of the province.
