Outcome
Examine gardening practices that support food security.
Indicators
(a) Discuss gardening as a potential means of supporting food security for individuals, families and communities.
(b) Propose ways to encourage gardening within the community (e.g., giving away seeds, offering community classes, sharing excess produce).
(c) Describe traditional in-ground gardening.
(d)

Examine various non-traditional gardening methods such as:

  • aquaponics;
  • Back to Eden;
  • container;
  • core;
  • edible landscaping;
  • hanging;
  • hydroponics;
  • lasagna;
  • raised beds;
  • rooftop;
  • square foot;
  • straw bale;
  • upside-down; and,
  • vertical.
(e) Compare the advantages and disadvantages of several gardening methods.
(f) Assess factors (e.g., available space, types of plants desired, lifestyle) that influence the selection of gardening methods.
(g) Discuss the importance of weed and pest control and management.
(h) Research current methods (e.g., cultural, natural, chemical, biological) for sustainable weed and pest control and management.
(i) Identify methods for gardening and pest management used in the local community and surrounding area.
