Module 20: Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (Core)
Outcome
Investigate models predicting the impact of climate change on food security and agricultural production.
Indicators
(a) Identify changing patterns of animal migration over the past decade and quarter century.
(b) Interpret comparative data regarding major weather events in Canada in previous 5 years and previous 100 years.
(c) Compare effects of natural disasters on food security in accessible and remote locations.
(d) Research predicted impacts of climate change on local, provincial, national and international food systems.
(e) Predict the impact on developing countries if food staples can no longer be grown.
(f) Identify what countries are likely to be most significantly affected by climate change.
(g) Research the potential impacts of climate change on agriculture, including supply chains, value chains, and up-cycling.
(h) Investigate circular economies and closed loop systems as potential approaches to mitigating the impact of climate change on agriculture.
(i)

Compare the impact of climate change in Canada and a select developing country, including:

  • potential changes to types of crops that can be grown:
  • changes in production practices that will be required; and,
  • the severity of impact on the domestic food system.
(j) Describe current research and actions undertaken by agricultural producers to adapt to climate change.
(k) Contemplate who should be responsible for increased costs of agricultural production predicted to accompany climate change.
(l) Identify emerging career opportunities related to agriculture and climate change.
