Module 1B: Agriculture Today - Significance (Core)
Outcome
Analyze the significance of Saskatchewan’s agriculture industry.
Indicators
(a) | Research the economic, environmental, cultural and social significance of Saskatchewan’s agriculture industry locally, provincially, nationally and globally. |
(b) | Chart the growth of various aspects of the agriculture industry in Saskatchewan over the past 25 years, using measures such as metric tonnes (e.g., crops), acres (e.g., farm size), kilograms (e.g., milk), cash receipts (e.g., livestock), numbers (e.g., farms or producers) and Gross Domestic Product. |
(c) | Investigate factors (e.g., family members/owners incorporating for tax reasons) that have contributed to the establishment and growth of largescale farming operations in the province. |
(d) | Analyze the growth of agriculture enterprises among First Nations communities in recent decades and the factors (e.g., signing of The 1992 Treaty Land Entitlement [TLE] Framework Agreement) that have contributed to the growth. |
(e) | Examine challenges (e.g., access to capital and financing, and limited agricultural knowledge and skill) faced by First Nations and Métis communities in establishing and growing farming operations and agribusiness enterprises in Saskatchewan. |
(f) | Assess provincial and federal legislation that apply to farmland ownership in Saskatchewan and Canada. |
(g) | Predict the impact of changes in the provincial, national and global population (i.e., growth and decline) on Saskatchewan agriculture. |
(h) | Investigate other factors (e.g., climate change, activity in global markets and legislation) that may impact agriculture in Saskatchewan. |
(i) | Identify current events, trends and issues affecting the agriculture industry in Saskatchewan and Canada. |
(j) | Investigate innovations in agriculture that are attributed to Saskatchewan. |
(k) | Trace the impact of the multiplier effect on an agriculture product (e.g., food product) from the selling price to the consumer to the selling price by the producer. |
