Module 9: Careers in Agribusiness (Core)
Outcome
Analyze opportunities for a successful career in agribusiness.
Indicators
(a) Research and describe the diverse opportunities (e.g., farm and livestock management, food science, agricultural and rural policy, foreign trade, entrepreneurship, commodity marketing and economic development) related to the field of agribusiness.
(b) Identify current and forecasted career opportunities and employment trends, including labour surpluses or shortages, in the field of agribusiness in Saskatchewan, Canada and the world.
(c) Research the availability of, and eligibility requirements for, employment programs (e.g., Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program or Temporary Foreign Worker) that attempt to fill vacancies in Canadian primary agriculture.
(d) Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of such employment programs from both the employer and worker perspectives.
(e) Debate the statement, “Growing up on a farm is necessary for a successful career in agribusiness.”
(f) Examine opportunities (e.g., independence, increased self-confidence and pride in ownership) and challenges (e.g., stress, anxiety, business succession, and mental health and well-being) associated with being an agribusiness owner.
(g) Reflect on personal interests, skills, abilities and traits that could lead to a one or more personal career options in agribusiness.
(h)

Envision oneself or another individual employed in the field of agribusiness in the future and describe the corresponding career journey including:

  • a description of the position (e.g., location, occupation, employer, working conditions, duties/responsibilities, salary and benefits);
  • skills, characteristics, attitudes, traits and interests that led to the career choice;
  • education and training;
  • mentorship opportunities accessed and offered to others;
  • leadership opportunities; and,
  • a summary of the supports provided by networks of individuals and organizations.
