Outcome
Analyze processes for selecting and developing an agribusiness enterprise.
Indicators
(a) Research local, provincial and national resources (e.g., industry organizations, government agencies, websites and financial institutions) that can assist with identifying and developing an agribusiness enterprise.
(b) Discuss the importance of accessing these resources for informed decision making.
(c)

Examine factors that should be considered when exploring an agribusiness enterprise for potential development which may include:

  • availability of inputs;
  • size of the market – current and potential;
  • competitors in the marketplace;
  • access to, and location of, markets;
  • fixed and variable costs;
  • land and building requirements;
  • human resource requirements;
  • packaging, storage and distribution;
  • climate, soil and water conditions;
  • environmental policies; and,
  • zoning regulations.
(d) Describe the concept of economic viability.
(e) Identify factors (e.g., public trust, environment and economic) that affect agriculture and agribusiness in the local or regional area.
(f) Differentiate among resources (e.g., technical, human and financial) required by a variety of agribusiness opportunities such as a tire shop, food processor, greenhouse, berry farm or trucking firm.
(g) Examine the role of market research in developing an agribusiness enterprise.
(h) Assess various methods (e.g., consumer polls, online surveys and focus groups) for conducting market research.
