Module 13: Planning an Agribusiness Enterprise (Core)
Outcome
Prepare for and present a business pitch for an agribusiness idea or concept.
Indicators
(a) Discuss the importance of planning before launching a start-up.
(b)

Develop questions that should be answered when planning a start-up, such as:

  • What is the business idea?
  • What need or want does it fill, or what problem does it solve?
  • Who are the targeted customers?
  • How much money and other resources will be required for start-up?
  • How will money and other resources be obtained?
  • What other resources are needed?
(c) Research the business model canvas and how it can be used to visualize and outline a business idea or concept.
(d)

Examine the components of the business model canvas, including:

  • Value proposition – what the unique business idea is and what it promises to deliver;
  • Customer segments – groups of people or companies to whom the business will target its product or service;
  • Key activities – processes and tasks that need to be completed in order to serve customers;
  • Key resources – resources (e.g., human, tools and financial) required and the source of those resources;
  • Channels – how the business will be marketed to gain and serve customers;
  • Customer relationships – a description of the type of relationship the business will have with customers and how the business will interact with them;
  • Key partners – the external companies or suppliers that will help the business carry out its activities;
  • Cost structure – all anticipated costs for establishing and operating the business; and,
  • Revenue streams – how the business will make money.
(e) Outline an agribusiness idea or concept using the business model canvas.
(f) Examine characteristics (e.g., short and concise, tells a story and pays attention to details) of an effective and compelling business pitch.
(g)

Propose, and develop answers for, questions that may be asked by investors or potential supporters during a business pitch, such as:

  • How big is the market for your idea?
  • Who are your competitors and what are their market shares?
  • What is your competitive advantage?
  • What is unique about your idea?
  • How much money are you prepared to invest yourself?
  • What other sources of finance do you have access to?
(h) Pitch the agribusiness idea or concept to trusted supporters.
(i) Reflect on feedback received from trusted supporters.
(j) Adjust the plan based on feedback received.
