ENTR5
Module 5: Design Thinking and Entrepreneurship (Core)
Outcome
Assess design thinking as a process for creating successful and meaningful entrepreneurial solutions.
Indicators
(a) Describe design thinking, including its human-centric nature.
(b) Research proposed benefits (e.g., increased efficiency and return on investment, increased opportunities for collaboration and reduced risk associated with launching new ideas) associated with using the design thinking process in business.
(c) Investigate how successful companies such as Netflix, Nike and Airbnb have incorporated design thinking into their business strategies.
(d) Identify the five stages of design thinking (i.e., empathize, define, ideate, prototype and test).
(e)

Describe processes and actions that are commonly taken during each stage of the design thinking process, such as:

  • observing consumers to understand the human need (empathize);
  • analyzing observations from the empathize stage to understand and define the problem to be solved (define);
  • brainstorming solutions for the problem (ideate);
  • creating an early sample or model of the solution (prototype); and,
  • observing how customers interact with the prototype and collecting consumer feedback (test).
(f) Explain the non-linear and iterative nature of the design thinking process.
(g) Analyze the role and importance of failure as part of the design thinking process.
(h) Research effective brainstorming techniques (e.g., green light thinking, mind maps, rapid ideation, game storming and step-ladder technique).
(i) Establish norms (e.g., defer all judgment, aim for quantity, build on others’ ideas and involve everyone) for group brainstorming.
(j) Apply the design thinking process to find solutions to real-life or given entrepreneurial scenarios.
