Module 7: Business and Community Development (Core)
Outcome
Explore community initiatives, government and community development agencies, and business associations that support entrepreneurship.
Indicators
(a) Describe networking and its importance for entrepreneurial success.
(b) Identify potential allies (e.g., family, friends, Elders, tribal councils, postsecondary and training institutions) that could be a part of personal and professional networks to support the development of a new venture within the community.
(c) Describe ways (e.g., volunteering, job shadows, attending business trade fairs or business functions and informational interviews) to build and expand personal and professional networks within the local business community
(d) Examine the mutual benefits of contributing to, and receiving support from, a network.
(e) Propose networking strategies for individuals who are uncomfortable with, or afraid of, the process.
(f) Reflect on personal comfort level with networking.
(g) Construct a plan to develop or grow personal networking skills.
(h) Discuss the value of mentorship in entrepreneurship for both mentors and mentees.
(i) Research the structure, mission and goals of various community development agencies, business associations and agencies (e.g., local and provincial chambers of commerce, Clarence Campeau Development Fund, SK Start-up Institute, Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan, Community Futures Saskatchewan, SaskMétis Economic Development Corporation and Tools and Finance for Aboriginal Business) that support Saskatchewan entrepreneurs.
(j) Examine the relationship between local entrepreneurial success and the growth and sustainability of communities in Saskatchewan.
(k) Investigate how business ventures evolve and change over time and how the need for, and kinds of, supports also evolve and change.
(l) Identify incentives or initiatives for new and expanding business development available within the local community.
(m) Research the availability of financial support (e.g., grants and loans) for Saskatchewan entrepreneurs including First Nations and Métis people, newcomers, women and youth.
(n) Describe the processes for accessing financial support available to Saskatchewan and Canadian entrepreneurs.
