Outcome
Identify, select and use fasteners properly.
Indicators
(a) Follow safe work practices when using fasteners, including maintaining a clean and organized work area.
(b) Classify agricultural equipment fasteners into common categories (e.g., bolts, nuts, clips, pins, rivets, screws and washers).
(c) Identify fasteners based on specifications such as metric/SAE, grade, length, diameter and thread pitch or count.
(d) Describe types (e.g., 12-point, carriage bolt, hex and Torx) of fastener heads commonly found in agricultural applications.
(e) Explore how adhesives and sealants are used as fasteners for agricultural equipment and how some of them are not compatible if mixed.
(f) Select and use appropriate tools to manipulate fasteners.
(g) Explain the importance of torque values and tightening sequence of specific fasteners.
(h) Adjust and utilize torque wrenches to properly tighten fasteners.
(i) Utilize a tap and die set to complete thread repair of damaged fasteners.
(j) Select and use appropriate tools to extract broken fasteners.
(k) Describe the use and effect of commercially available products to assist with the removal (e.g., penetrating oil) or securing of fasteners (e.g., Loctite).
