Outcome
Investigate diagnostic service processes for agricultural equipment storage batteries.
Indicators
(a) Follow the manufacturer’s safe work practices when working with storage batteries, including maintaining a clean and organized work area.
(b) Identify the manufacturer’s requirements for the voltage, size, shape and quantity of batteries required for specific agricultural equipment.
(c) Describe the construction and operation of common types (e.g., absorbent glass mat [AGM] and lead acid) of agricultural equipment storage batteries.
(d) Identify cold cranking amperes (CCA) and reserve capacity minutes of storage batteries.
(e) Perform service tests (e.g., check voltage and load) on storage batteries.
(f) Follow safe procedures including connection order when performing battery replacement, boosting and charging operations.
(g) Describe and diagnose common battery failures (e.g., frozen, sulfated and short circuits).
(h) Follow correct environmental procedures for recycling and disposal of storage batteries.
(i) Identify emergency procedures for first aid and cleanup of ruptured batteries.
