Module 19: Starting Systems (Optional)
Outcome
Investigate engine starting systems.
Indicators
(a) Follow safe work practices (e.g., disconnect battery, prevent grounding of live wires, and be aware of sharp surfaces and cleaning agents) when working with engine starting systems, including maintaining a clean and organized work area.
(b) Identify and find the components (e.g., battery, ignition switch, starter motor, solenoid, starter relay and safety lockout switch) of an engine starting system.
(c) Discuss the function and operation of an engine starting system.
(d) Describe the operation of a starter including the starter activation and drive mechanisms.
(e) Identify common faults and symptoms associated with engine starting system malfunctions.
(f) Perform tests on engine starting systems using appropriate equipment like multimeters.
(g) Discuss how to use voltage drop to test a starter.
(h) Diagnose, repair and confirm the repair of common starting system faults (e.g., control circuit failure, starter failure and poor connections).
(i) Perform safety checks to ensure equipment does not move unintentionally when performing starter system tests.
