Investigate engine starting systems.
Indicators
(a) | Follow safe work practices (e.g., disconnect battery, prevent grounding of live wires, and be aware of sharp surfaces and cleaning agents) when working with engine starting systems, including maintaining a clean and organized work area. |
(b) | Identify and find the components (e.g., battery, ignition switch, starter motor, solenoid, starter relay and safety lockout switch) of an engine starting system. |
(c) | Discuss the function and operation of an engine starting system. |
(d) | Describe the operation of a starter including the starter activation and drive mechanisms. |
(e) | Identify common faults and symptoms associated with engine starting system malfunctions. |
(f) | Perform tests on engine starting systems using appropriate equipment like multimeters. |
(g) | Discuss how to use voltage drop to test a starter. |
(h) | Diagnose, repair and confirm the repair of common starting system faults (e.g., control circuit failure, starter failure and poor connections). |
(i) | Perform safety checks to ensure equipment does not move unintentionally when performing starter system tests. |
