DEST1
Module 1: Introduction to Design Studies (Core)
Outcome
Explore design studies and the stages of a design process.
Indicators
(a) Describe the various categories or branches of the study of design, including:
  • consumer product design;
  • textile and fashion design;
  • architectural and interior design;
  • garden and landscape design;
  • capital product design;
  • systems and network design;
  • graphic design (e.g., branding, corporate identity);
  • environmental design;
  • software and interface design;
  • industrial design; and,
  • urban design (community planning).
(b) Identify the steps of the design process, including:
  • define the problem, challenge or need to be addressed;
  • collect information pertinent to the problem, challenge or need;
  • brainstorm potential approaches and solutions;
  • analyze and assess ideas and potential solutions;
  • develop potential solutions;
  • test potential solutions and/or present ideas for feedback;
  • collect data from test of potential solutions;
  • refine and improve tested solution; and,
  • test, refine and improve the design.
(c) Examine how the design process is non-linear and recursive, and includes:
  • communication of the problem or need by the end user to the designer; and,
  • clarification of perception of end user expectation by the designer; or need held by the designer; provided (i.e., test, refine and improve, test again).
(d) Create a visual representation (e.g., flow chart, concept map, story board) of the stages of a design process.
(e) Apply the steps of the design process to a simple design challenge.
